Zagrobla
Zagrobla
Zagrobla was one of the most accomplished mares bred by Michalow State Stud, distinguished by an exceptional international show career and lasting significance as a broodmare. Bred in Poland and later owned by Bautista Vich Stud in Spain, she represented a generation of Polish Arabians that successfully combined traditional breeding values with modern show success.
Born in 1994, Zagrobla was a daughter by the influential chestnut stallion Monogramm (Negatraz x Monogramma), whose impact on Polish breeding proved substantial. Bred in the United States by Kay and Richard Patterson, Monogramm descended from the Kuhailan Haifi sire line, tracing back to the desert-bred stallion Kuhailan Haifi imported to Gumniska in 1931, and from the Sahara dam line. Leased to Michalow State Stud in the 1990s under the direction of Ignacy Jaworowski, Monogramm contributed refinement, presence, and powerful movement to his offspring. Over the course of his use in Poland, including later via frozen semen, he sired more than 100 foals in Poland, many of which became influential in modern Polish breeding.
On the dam side, Zagrobla descended from Zguba (by Enrilo out of Zazula by Negatiw), a mare representing the distinguished Selma dam line of Hamdaniyah Simriyah strain, continued in Michalow Stud through Zlota Iwa of Bratkowice State Stud. Zguba’s dam, Zazula, was herself a highly decorated show mare, having earned the titles of European Senior Reserve Champion Mare and 1984 All Nations Cup Senior Champion Mare.
Zagrobla's own show career began early and was marked by consistent results at the highest level. As a junior, Zagrobla quickly established herself on both the national and international stage. In 1995, she was named Reserve Champion Junior Filly at the Polish National Show and the Polish Spring Show. The following year, she again earned the title of Polish National Reserve Champion Junior Filly. In 1996, she also achieved major international recognition when she won the title of Champion Junior Filly at the Bábolna International Show and was named Reserve Champion Junior Filly at the All Nations Cup in Aachen.
Zagrobla’s success continued as she matured. In 1998, she was awarded the title of Champion Mare at Bábolna, confirming her development into a strong and balanced senior competitor. Her most significant achievements came in 2000, when she won the World Championships in Paris (beating the legandary Kwestura). In the same year, she was also named All Nations Cup Champion Senior Mare and European Reserve Champion Senior Mare. In 2003, she added another major accolade by becoming U.S. National Champion Mare, demonstrating her ability to succeed under different judging systems and across continents.
Beyond her own achievements, Zagrobla proved her value as a broodmare. She produced eleven registered foals in the Polish stud book. Among her most notable offspring was Zigi Zana (by QR Marc), a grey mare born in 2009, who achieved significant success in international halter competition, including championship titles at Polish National and European level. Another important daughter was Zlota Orda (by Pesal), who became a valued broodmare at Michalów before being exported to Sweden. Still in Poland, Zlota Orda produced Zloty Medal (by QR Marc), who served as chief sire at Michalów, as well as several daughters exported to breeding programs in France, Namibia, and Russia.
Zagrobla died in December 2019 at the age of 25.
